How Somfy structured measurement to steer the reduction of its IT environmental footprint
Global leader in its sector and pioneer in home automation and motorisation for over 50 years, Somfy has committed to reducing its carbon footprint by half by 2030. While products account for most of the footprint, IT represents a significant share of the remaining 20%.
Several initiatives were already in place — device refurbishment, internal eco-design standards, social and environmental programmes — but without a consolidated view or precise measurement to assess their effectiveness.
“Measurement allows us to demonstrate, with facts, that the efforts we make are effective — and to contribute reliably to the Somfy Group’s overall footprint calculation.”
David Lyonnaz-Perroux, Green IT Project Leader
About
Operating in 59 countries, Somfy is the world leader in automatic controls for openings and closures in homes and buildings. It offers a range of motorized solutions and control points and is a key player in smart home systems.
Challenge
Before Aguaro, Somfy lacked a measurement framework that would:
provide a detailed footprint aligned with the actual life cycle of IT assets
avoid overly approximate approaches based on generic spend-based ratios
compare existing initiatives and identify the most effective levers
embed environmental impact into all IT decisions
The IT department also needed reliable environmental indicators to bring teams together and move from scattered initiatives to a structured approach.
Solution
Somfy chose Aguaro for its native integration with the existing ServiceNow CMDB and its ability to deliver a detailed carbon footprint quickly.
The module uses data already available (models, entry and exit dates, countries, life-cycle information…) to produce an accurate measurement within a few months.
Support provided to IT and Sustainability teams helped anchor the methodology, build shared understanding of impact orders of magnitude, and prioritise actions.
Results
Complete IT carbon footprint established in a few months, directly from CMDB data
Immediate identification of key impact drivers, including the underestimated footprint of monitors
Greater visibility into the effectiveness of existing initiatives (refurbishment, extended lifetimes)
Increased team maturity, supported by granular and comparable data.
A continuous steering framework, enabling monthly or quarterly monitoring and stronger engagement across teams.
