Digital devices are omnipresent in our lives, but their environmental impact is significant. Interestingly, the way these impacts are measured can vary depending on the data source. Louise Aubet, R&D Manager at Resilio, and Benjamin Violet, Sustainable IT Engineer at Aguaro, conducted a study comparing impact data from product carbon footprint (PCF) reports with data from the Resilio Database.

DIVING INTO THE DATA

This comparative study allowed us to examine different methodologies and to identify discrepancies in the results—even for products with similar technical characteristics (specs). These variations raise key questions: Which life cycle stages are included? How much detail is provided about materials and manufacturing processes? These factors can have a considerable influence on the final results.

THE NEED FOR TRANSPARENCY AND COMPARISONS

The analysis highlights a critical challenge: ensuring the transparency of the data and methods used to assess carbon impacts. Without clear and consistent methods, it’s hard to compare carbon footprint data or make informed decisions—whether for purchasing choices or emission reduction strategies. Combining independent data sources, like Resilio’s, with manufacturer reports gives a more nuanced view. It also points to the need for standardized practices to ensure reliable and actionable assessments that are useful to all stakeholders.
